Challenge Academy, a subsidiary of Three Cord Youth Services, is an alternative education school for students in grades 6 through 12.  Located in York, PAs historic Salem Square, Challenge Academy contracts with school districts in York County to provide academic, therapeutic and transition services.

Challenge Academy is a service-centered program.  The key to our success has been strong parental involvement coupled with intensive relationship building between students and staff.  We exhaust all options in helping students become successful in the classroom, school, family and community including networking to connect families and students to needed and appropriate services.  Our Behavior Coordinators provide door to door transportation, affording twice daily parental contact and assurance that students attend school regularly.  Phone conferencing, multidisciplinary meetings and home visits are a constant within the program.

Challenge Academys small, self-contained classes provide students with individual academic attention.  Upon entrance, students take a diagnostic test to ascertain current academic levels. Curriculum is based on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.  PSSA preparation is incorporated into the daily schedule.  The use of a wireless mobile lab of computer laptops encourages student involvement in project based learning.  Students with IEPs participate in regular classes; remedial assistance is available on an as needed basis.

Challenge Academy contracts with the Lehman Center for art therapy.  Individual and group counseling is provided on site.  PUSH (Persevere, Understand, Strive and Honor), a therapeutic classroom, is available for students with more severe behavioral issues.  Our daily Trenches Program combines physical exercises with social skill training and character education.  Each student has an Individual Service Plan and monthly behavior reports are forwarded to the sending school district.

Transition back to the sending school district includes preplanning, individual reentry schedules and intensive follow up. Pull back is available, if appropriate. Services are also provided for students needing a more restrictive program.
